The Role
We are seeking a Backend Developer with strong AI expertise to build intelligent tools for the Shopify ecosystem. This role will involve designing and training custom machine learning models, integrating them into scalable backend systems, and powering features like personalization, automation, and predictive insights. You will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to deliver impactful, real-world solutions.

What You’ll Do

AI & Machine Learning

Design, build, and deploy custom AI/ML models to support personalization, automation, and predictive features.
Collaborate with the team to integrate machine learning outputs into backend systems and Shopify apps.
Stay current with AI tools, APIs, and frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, PyTorch) and apply them effectively in production.

Backend Development

Collaborate with the senior developer to build and maintain Shopify apps and backend infrastructure.
Write clean, modular Node.js code to power backend functionality and data integrations.
Optimize server-side performance, API data flow, and overall backend architecture.
Integrate with third-party platforms including OpenAI, Klaviyo, Recharge, and others.

UI & Frontend Support

Develop dynamic UI components using the Vue.js framework as needed to support product functionality.

Engineering Collaboration

Participate in technical planning, code reviews, and solution architecture discussions.
Troubleshoot and debug issues across the full stack.
Stay up-to-date on Shopify platform changes, app development best practices, and evolving tools in both backend and AI domains.

What We’re Looking For

3+ years of experience in backend development and applied machine learning.
Proven experience training and deploying AI/ML models in production environments.
Proficiency in PyTorch or similar frameworks for model development.
Experience working with Shopify APIs, app infrastructure, and third-party integrations.
Solid understanding of JavaScript, Node.js, and modern backend development practices.
Familiarity with AI infrastructure and tools such as OpenAI, LangChain, or Pinecone.
Experience with Vue.js for developing user-facing components.
Demonstrated ability to work across the full stack—from model training to backend service integration.
Comfortable collaborating in fast-paced, iterative environments with cross-functional teams.
Experience with databases like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Firestore.
Ability to write clean, testable, and scalable code with strong maintainability.
Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills across backend and model integration issues.
Experience using Git and modern development tools (e.g., GitHub, CI/CD pipelines).
